PlayStation's Horizon saga adapts to the charming LEGO format: Adventure, cooperation, and plenty of humor
PlayStation joins forces with LEGO to bring one of its most illustrious sagas to other platforms in this format.
LEGO is one of the licenses with the strongest presence in the video game sector. In recent years, the famous building blocks have been used to adapt well-known franchises such as Harry Potter, The Lord of the Rings and Star Wars, bringing together the entire Skywalker saga with its nine episodes. However, everything indicates that the franchise wants to broaden its horizons, and this time, they've found a luxury ally to adapt one of the most famous sagas of modern times in the interactive entertainment sector. Thus, PlayStation itself has worked together with the building block brand to create LEGO Horizon Adventures.
With this, Aloy's adventures and her universe are adapted to the friendly block format with the casual humor that characterizes this type of video game, offering a condensed and lighter version of the storyline and featuring some of the license's best-known characters in block form. In fact, LEGO Horizon Adventures focuses on multiplayer, featuring up to 4 different playable characters. In addition to the main protagonist Aloy, other characters such as Varl, Teersa, and Erend join the adventure to play solo or cooperatively with another friend, family member, or partner and experience these special adventures together.
One of the special features of LEGO Horizon Adventures is that it's one of the first PlayStation Studios productions to land on Nintendo Switch, suggesting that the Japanese firm is finally opening up to new markets by releasing versions of its licenses on other platforms. However, at the moment, there's no confirmed release of the title for Xbox consoles.
LEGO Horizon Adventures presents itself as a summary of the first installment in the series. While narrating some of the most relevant events of Horizon: Zero Dawn, the characters bring humor to every situation, lightening the dystopian tone of the original title. In this way, with a condensed format, the video game serves to promote the brand and entertain the whole family in a lighter way. One of the particularities of LEGO Horizon Adventures is its short duration compared to the title it's based on, as it can be completed in just 8 hours.
In terms of design, the game perfectly blends the unique elements of the Horizon: Zero Dawn universe with other LEGO titles. Across four different biomes, maps based on some of the most iconic locations from the video game originally released on PS4 are presented in the classic block format. Additionally, the characteristic machine designs from the Horizon world are also adapted to this format with great success, giving them plenty of personality while following the usual conventions of this type of video game. Each character has their signature weapon that can be adapted to different technologies, as in the main game with Aloy's bow and the use of elements such as fire, ice, and electricity.
LEGO Horizon Adventures is one of the block games that makes the greatest effort to offer gameplay that's completely identifiable with its source franchise, showing PlayStation's close involvement in development, paying attention to many details that allow the Horizon world to fit into the LEGO format. Naturally, this fusion creates an excellent symbiosis, as LEGO City and LEGO Ninjago elements are present in the title to provide a wide range of customization options through special outfits and environmental constructions.
Horizon is undoubtedly one of the most important franchises for the PlayStation brand right now. With the recent release of the remastered version of the first game, it appears that Guerrilla Games is working on several projects simultaneously related to the license, so there's material for many years to come with the adventures of Aloy and company. However, the arrival of LEGO Horizon Adventures might open the door to other collaborations in this format.
Thus, the possibility of other major PlayStation licenses being adapted to the LEGO format doesn't seem far-fetched. LEGO Horizon Adventures could be a testing ground to see how well the title performs and serve as the first step toward new proposals. This way, seeing a possible LEGO God of War or LEGO The Last of Us, among others, could be a plausible option to continue this alliance. For now, these are just speculations, as nothing has been announced, but the arrival of this entry was unpredictable before becoming reality, so we'll have to closely follow PlayStation's plans with LEGO.
On the other hand, the success of LEGO Horizon Adventures may also determine whether PlayStation will continue to target other platforms like Nintendo Switch for these lower-budget productions. At a time when the Japanese firm is beginning to enter the PC market with some of its major productions, it could be a perfect opportunity to open new market avenues with its most successful licenses.
